En français : Notes Google des hôtels et de la restauration à Paris et Prague · Česky: Hodnocení hotelů a podniků na Googlu v Praze a Paříži
The short answer
On 25 July 2026 we searched Google Maps for hotels, restaurants and fast food in Paris and Prague and kept every hotel and food place with at least 20 reviews: 1,867 listings. The median rating is 4.4, and 24% of them sit at 4.0 or below.
Fast-food chains do much worse than independents in both cities. In Prague, 85% of chain outlets (22 of 26) sit at 4.0 or below, against 31% of independent places (29 of 95). In Paris it is 46% (56 of 123) against 21% (123 of 597). Of the 25 McDonald's in central Paris, 24 sit at 4.0 or below, with a median of 3.4. The 7 in the inner suburbs we covered all do.
Hotels are the other surprise. 38% of Paris hotels and 37% of Prague hotels sit at 4.0 or below. In Madrid and Barcelona it was 16%.
What we measured and what we did not
We collected this data in July to find businesses to write to, and then saw that the numbers say something on their own. The method is easy to repeat.
- In each city we ran Google Maps searches in the local language and took the listings Google returned, up to 140 per search. Paris: "hôtel", "restaurant" and "restauration rapide". Prague: "hotel", "restaurace" and "rychlé občerstvení". The fast-food search in Paris also returned places in the inner suburbs (Vincennes, Boulogne-Billancourt, Montreuil and others). We show them as a separate row.
- We kept listings whose Google category is lodging or food. Listings Google mixed into the results that are not a hotel or a place to eat were removed.
- We kept listings with at least 20 reviews.
- A fast-food chain outlet is a branch or franchise of a national or international brand (McDonald's, KFC, Burger King, Subway, O'Tacos, Sushi Shop, Quick, Pizza Hut, Bageterie Boulevard and a few more). A chain hotel is one whose Google listing links to a hotel group's website (Accor, Marriott, Hilton, Wyndham, Ascott and others). Everything else counts as independent.
Three limits before the numbers:
- This is what Google shows first for each search, not a census. Google puts big, busy listings at the top, so the sample is heavy: the median listing has 482 reviews.
- The rating is the one Google displays, rounded to one decimal. A 4.0 can be anything from 3.95 to 4.04.
- The data is from 25 July 2026, in high season. Ratings with this many reviews move slowly, but some will have changed.
The table
| Area | Segment | Listings | Median rating | 4.0 or below | Below 3.5 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paris | Hotels | 172 | 4.2 | 38% (65) | 16% (27) |
| Paris | Restaurants | 131 | 4.6 | 8% (10) | 3% (4) |
| Paris | Fast food | 720 | 4.4 | 25% (179) | 6% (44) |
| Paris inner suburbs | Fast food | 459 | 4.4 | 19% (86) | 5% (21) |
| Prague | Hotels | 114 | 4.2 | 37% (42) | 9% (10) |
| Prague | Restaurants | 136 | 4.4 | 13% (18) | 1% (2) |
| Prague | Fast food | 121 | 4.2 | 42% (51) | 12% (14) |
The suburbs also returned 6 hotels and 8 restaurants. Too few to put in the table, they are in the CSV.
Chains against independents
| Area | Fast food | Listings | 4.0 or below | Median rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paris | Chains | 123 | 46% (56) | 4.1 |
| Paris | Independents | 597 | 21% (123) | 4.5 |
| Paris inner suburbs | Chains | 62 | 45% (28) | 4.1 |
| Paris inner suburbs | Independents | 397 | 15% (58) | 4.5 |
| Prague | Chains | 26 | 85% (22) | 3.9 |
| Prague | Independents | 95 | 31% (29) | 4.3 |
Hotels do not split the same way. In Paris, 35% of chain hotels (12 of 34) and 38% of independents (53 of 138) sit at 4.0 or below. The real difference is lower down: 19% of independent Paris hotels are below 3.5, against 3% of chain hotels. Prague has only 8 chain hotels in the sample, too few to compare.
McDonald's across six European cities
We now have the same kind of data for six cities. McDonald's is the one brand present in all of them in numbers.
| City | McDonald's in the sample | At 4.0 or below | Median rating | Collected |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paris | 25 | 24 | 3.4 | 25 July 2026 |
| Paris inner suburbs | 7 | 7 | 3.3 | 25 July 2026 |
| Prague | 8 | 6 | 4.0 | 25 July 2026 |
| Madrid and Barcelona | 21 | 20 | n/a | 25 July 2026 |
| Lisbon | 15 | 15 | 3.8 | October 2026 |
| Porto | 4 | 1 | n/a | October 2026 |
That is 73 of 80. The Madrid, Barcelona, Lisbon and Porto rows come from our earlier study.
What we think the numbers say
A busy chain outlet collects thousands of reviews from people in a hurry, and one slow evening shows up in all of them. An independent place has fewer reviews and an owner who often reads them. We cannot prove from ratings alone that answering reviews lifts a score, and we do not claim it. What the data does show is how heavy these ratings are. The median Paris McDonald's has 3,513 reviews. A single good week barely moves a number like that.
For a hotel the stakes are plainer. A guest who filters Google Maps to 4.0 and up does not see 38% of the hotels in Paris.
Asking for reviews without breaking the rules
Google allows you to ask every customer for a review. It does not allow you to ask only happy customers, or to offer anything in exchange. See Google's rules on reviews and the prohibited and restricted content policy. In the EU, fake or bought reviews are also a consumer-law matter.
The data
You can download the 1,867 rows we used (area, segment, chain or independent, rating, number of reviews, whether the listing has a website, whether it is a McDonald's, search and date). We removed business names and Google identifiers. Download the CSV. If you use the numbers, we only ask for a link to this page.
